This is an excellent price for a very good quality supplement. The softgels are small and easy to swallow and caused me no digestive issues. The best by date is about 3 years from manufacturing (manufactured 2/2025, received 10/2025, exp 1/2028.)I removed two stars because the gels are all in a lump in the package, making it difficult to separate them (potentially a problem with shipping or storage), because they were not freshly manufactured (8 months old) and because they are made in China.

Vacuum sealed bag; tiny gelcaps
This astaxanthin comes in a vacuum sealed pouch rather than in a bottle. This makes it take up less room, yet I still prefer bottles, so I used one of my empty supplement bottles to put these gelcaps in.The gelcaps are small and easy to swallow. There is no taste or aftertaste with these. You only need to take 1 a day for a 12 mg dose. The bag will last 4 months. For the current price of $17, that is quite reasonable, averaging out to 14 cents per day.As for results, that is expected to take time to see. This is an antioxidant that is believed to improve eyes, skin, brain, heart, and immune system. Consistency is key!

Great supplement
I have never tried astaxanthin in softgel form before, so I am curious to see how it fits in my supplemental routine. The softgels are small, circular, and dark red. There is no smell, taste, or aftertaste from taking the softgels. It has a serving size of 1 softgel per day so it was easy to add to my daily routine. I take it every morning before breakfast with some water, and it goes down easy.

Small, easy to swallo
They are small and easy to swallow. They have caused so stomach discomfort at times. When I remember to take them everyday, I am fine but if I forget for a day or 2, my stomach does feel a little weird shortly after. The pills were also stuck together when I first got the product. Like if they melted together while being shipped. I have to rip them apart. The product itself seems to be helping my skin clear up and stay soft.

Asian made, non-vegan astaxanthin in POOR storage condition
This is a private-label Astaxanthin [AX], produced by an undisclosed OEM manufacturer in China, which is sold here by the household-items seller Xinhua Shuikou e-Commerce Co. under its trademark Beyxdu. In addition, a different mark (AcentialLabs) is printed on the container bag, which is also a private-label brand of dietary and herbal supplements, widely available for wholesale on the main platform in China ; AcentialLabs is associated with Atoany Inc. and Fullmart Inc., Florida companies under Chinese supervision, likely from the OEM manufacturer.[2] Source.How AX is extracted from the microalgae’s thick and rigid cell wall is germane to its quality. Industrial extraction involves cell disruption (to break down the cell wall), and the actual extraction of AX. The traditional and widely used method involves organic solvents (such as acetone, ethanol, hexane, or a mixture of these) that is cheaper and effective, but the amount of solvent residues in the final AX is a recognised matter of concern — there are health-safer methods (such as supercritical fluid extraction), but are more expensive. The lack of disclosure of the manufacturer and method used inevitably suggests the cheapest extraction.[3] Specs.According to the label, it uses sunflower seed oil (it’s undisclosed whether the oil is refined or unrefined) as carrier for the 12 mg of AX inside each softgel made of gelatin, and comes packaged in a plastic bag with an inner aluminium-foil layer that has the format and printing typical of Chinese OEM wholesale manufacturers. The bag has a vegan icon, but that is a *false* claim — gelatin is a protein exclusively derived from animal collagen (obtained by boiling the skin, bones, ligaments, and tendons), so the product is neither vegan nor vegetarian.[4] Inspection.The AX lability to be thermally denatured during extraction or storage, or both, can affect bioavailability and bioactivity. Upon opening the bag, I found that many of the softgels were clustered together and did not separate easily (figure A). For gelatin softgels, this is a usual sign of *poor* storage conditions, and the most likely cause is exposure to temperatures significantly above those recommended for storage (typically 59-77 °F or 15-25 °C), as the gelatin shell softens, becoming flaccid and sticky, which makes the capsules to adhere to each other forming lumps. Other temperature problems, such as cycling or fluctuations, may also be in play if the air sealed in the foil bag improperly contained moisture, which facilitates clumping. At any rate, this indicates a degradation of the product.No matter its extraction method, a properly stored AX should easily mix with its oil carrier, and have uniform color, transparency, and dispersion capabilities. I examined the contents of a softgel I pulled out from the biggest clump, and of a free unclumped one, by fully extruding their liquid on respective discs of paper towel placed on plastic flat dishes. Figure B shows the results about 2 minutes (left panels) and 12 hours (right panels) after the extrusion. The contents of the unclumped capsule (lower panels) migrated easily on the paper disc with homogenous colour — by the time its contents were completely dispersed throughout the entire disc, the surface of the dish under the paper was clean and dry. In contrast, the contents of the clumped softgel migrated irregularly with non-homogeneous colour, and even several days later did not disperse throughout the entire disc — the surface of the dish was partially covered with somewhat gooey-like softgel contents under the stained regions of the paper.A further difference between these capsules was the elastic self-recovery of their shape after having been squeezed flat to release the contents. The unclumped softgel recovered its shape 12 hours after, but the clumped softgel took at least some 48 hours despite that one of its poles was cut off to ensure full extrusion, instead of just sliced open (see inset figure B), so air entrance was not impeded, suggesting physical changes in the gelatin shell material.[5] Dosage.AX has no established Daily Value in the US. In 2019, the EU’s Food Safety Authority assessed the Acceptable Daily Intake to 0.2 mg/kg of body weight (0.091 mg/lb) for adults and children 14 years old or older. For the average US adult male of 200 lb and female of 171 lb (a 12/2021 CDC estimate), the EU’s ADI would be around 18 mg and 16 mg respectively, so the dose suggested on the label is within safe limits.[6] Risks.In some people, AX can produce side effects (like mild gastrointestinal issues, rare allergic reactions, and –only at very high doses– a slight orange/yellow tint to the skin, generally considered harmless). In addition, it has associated *potential* health risks: [i] Some studies have reported it may affect 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme converting testosterone into the hormone DHT (prescribed drugs also known to affect this enzyme, such as finasteride and dutasteride, can cause male gynaecomastia and sexual dysfunction) ; [ii] some studies suggest AX can lower blood pressure and calcium levels, so it might influence antihypertensive treatments ; [iii] AX may have mild blood-thinning effects, so combining it with anticoagulants like warfarin, aspirin or clopidogrel could increase the risk of bleeding ; and [iv] animal studies have suggested that high doses of antioxidants like AX might interfere with certain types of cancer treatments, particularly chemotherapy, although human data are more limited.Given the noted indications of improper storage of the batch I received, this is a product to be avoided.~~
