Unclear labeling and unnecessary dyes– I don’t feel safe taking this

This supplement contains ingredients that are meant to target vision health, along with other supposed benefits such as antioxidant and metabolic support. It has an appealing list of ingredients: thiamine, taurine, N-acetyl cysteine, S-acetyl glutathione, pterostilbene, lutein, lycopene, and zeaxanthin. Unfortunately, the label doesn’t specify HOW MUCH of each ingredient is in this supplement, aside from the thiamine (20 mg). The rest of the ingredients are simply listed as 1500 mg of a “proprietary blend”. What is that supposed to mean, and how is anyone supposed to know what they’re actually getting for the rather high price tag of this supplement? There could be too little of any ingredient listed, or there could be too much. Quantities of each ingredient could potentially vary from one batch to another. There is simply no way to know. Personally, I do not feel safe taking any supplement of such questionable formulation. Also, why are the capsules dyed bright blue? There is no reason for this. All it does is add an unnecessary artificial ingredient to a supplement.In the interest of fully reviewing this product, I did take one dose. The smell of these things is awful, and the aftertaste is just as bad. Even if I felt safe taking this supplement on a daily basis, the aftertaste would put me off of it quickly.

Initially Promising, But Lack of Transparency & Addition of FD&C Blue are Issues

This Vision supplement caught my attention because its formula which contains lutein, lycopene, NAC, taurine and thiamine looked much more supportive than the incomplete Amazon listing would suggest.I did a little research on Alchemetics and discovered that this appears to be a very new supplement brand, but the people behind it aren’t new to the health and wellness world. Co-founder Blake Kassel has a long history in fitness and product development and is the founder of Bodylastics, which he launched in the 1990s, as well as LiveExercise.That made me wonder whether this new venture might represent an expansion of that experience into nutritional supplements.Because the product is positioned as a premium eye-health supplement, I was hopeful that this might be a thoughtfully formulated product rather than another generic vision supplement with a long list of ingredients. Prior to ordering I requested an ingredient panel and a 3rd Party Testing COA and I received an immediate response indicating that yes, the company would provide one. And even though I normally only order supplements that indicate that they are 3rd Party Lab Tested and GMP Certified, I thought I would give it a try as I was running low on my present eye supplement.When the product arrived and I had an opportunity to review the ingredient label, I was disappointed at what I found. The primary ingredients are camouflaged in a proprietary blend, with the total blend weight disclosed but not the individual amounts of each ingredient. That makes it impossible for a consumer to determine whether the beneficial ingredients are included at meaningful doses. For a supplement making intentional eye-health claims, I consider this a serious issue as I believe that transparency with regard to dosing is important. In fact for me, it is a critical factor in decision making when incorporating a supplement into my daily regimen.I could see very clearly from the listing photos that the supplement was a bright blue color, but as I assumed it was a premium supplement, I expected a natural coloring agent. The inclusion of FD&C Blue No. 1 was an unexpected disappointment. I understand that Blue No. 1 is still legally permitted and I am not suggesting that its presence makes the product unsafe or illegal. My concern is more about the judgment behind the formulation. This is a newly launched supplement marketed for eye health and positioned as a premium product, yet the manufacturer chose to add an artificial petroleum-based color that provides no nutritional or therapeutic benefit.This is difficult to understand given the current movement in the supplement industry away from synthetic dyes: the FDA has specifically identified FD&C Blue No. 1 among the petroleum-based dyes it intends to phase out from the food supply. For me, that choice affects confidence in the company’s formulation strategy. If a premium health product can be made without an unnecessary artificial color, why include it?These two issues – the proprietary blend without specific mg. amounts of individual ingredients and the artificial coloring additive – put a real damper on my initial enthusiasm for this product. The formula may contain some worthwhile ingredients, but when a company launches a premium eye-health supplement without disclosing the individual amounts of its key ingredients while at the same time including an unnecessary synthetic dye that many health-conscious manufacturers are moving away from, it makes me question how carefully the product was formulated.I would have expected greater transparency and a cleaner, more thoughtful formula from a product making these kinds of health claims and positioning their product in a premium tier with their pricing.For these reasons, I can’t recommend this supplement to you.

Proprietary Blend

Reviewing any type of supplement is always very subjective. Many times, it can take weeks or months for any benefit or side effects to be noticed. So, my review is directly related to my (or my wife’s) experience after using the product.I have been hearing a lot about NAC and wanted to try it out for myself. Upon further research, N-Acetyl Cysteine has many different uses. I am most interested in its potential benefits for the eyes. The ingredients of this product do have antioxidant properties. Proprietary Blend means that they do not have to list proportions of ingredients. That is something that I do not like.The capsules are easy to swallow and I have not had any ill effects from using them. I do split the dose morning and evening.I would also like testing information regarding this product.MY PERSONAL COMMENTS:I am an approved Amazon Vine Member. We are provided the opportunity to order (free of charge) many items that are new to the market, or where a seller just wants some additional exposure for their product. We are NOT required to review every item in exchange for using it. I personally only order products that are important to me (and/or my wife), items I can use or items that I have the ability to properly test (I have lots of test equipment). So, from that use/testing I can provide an honest evaluation & review (and not always a 4 or 5 star) based upon my use and testing of the product. Have not detected any benefits from such a pricy product with little transparency

These eye vitamins come nicely packaged in a glass jar that is safety sealed. They are bright blue (important for those with allergies!!) and slightly larger than an average capsule. They have a slight yucky scent that I only notice when moving or taking them. There is no noticeable taste.I was a little put off that the product listing does not show the ingredient label. Why?? For $43.95 people want to know what they are buying. As I mentioned above, these pills are bright blue. I’m allergic to some red dyes; others might be allergic to blue dyes. Of course they would want to know what coloring is in these before investing $44.00. Beyond that, I’m sure the average consumer would want to know exactly what is in these prior to purchasing as well. I don’t get it, and it honestly makes me question the company.Compounding the lack of transparency is that when the bottle is received, the ingredient label still does not list what is in these capsules. I understand the need for a “proprietary blend”, but if it loses potential customers, I’m not sure how effective having a proprietary blend is. Just my two cents.I still felt okay trying these out, taking two a day as recommended. I obviously can’t say if they have had any internal effect, but I certainly haven’t noticed anything outwardly, or any difference with my eye health. At the given dosage, a jar would last a month, give or take a couple of days. At the current price of $43.95 for a 30-day supply, and without even knowing exactly what I’m paying such an extravagant price for, I would not remotely consider ordering this again.
