I use high flavanol cocoa powder as both a health supplement as well as a flavoring agent. I am excited that Toniiq has a high flavanol cocoa powder because I use a lot of supplements from this brand, and overall my trust is high.However, I have a brand of cocoa flavanols that I find to be top tier for my health goals, and was curious how Toniiq would measure up.There are differences, and while overall I still prefer my other brand, CocoaVia Cocoa Flavanols I am absolutely pleased to incorporate this Toniiq cocoa powder into my routine. Enough so that I will likely order more when the time comes (or there is a sale).The other brand uses a highly studied, clinically validated source of cocoa flavanols (Pharmaceutical-grade cocoapro extract). There is no comparison. It is what is used for marked changes in cognition and cardiovascular health. It is only supplement with long time valid human studies.That being said, an ultra high flavanol product is good too. If you are looking for ultra high flavanol content, then Toniiq wins. If you want a stronger true chocolate flavor, again, Toniiq wins. It is chocolaty and mildy sweet. It is lovely, and I adore it as part of my supplement routine where I want a boost of flavor and flavanols. Really great in yogurt, spun into protein drinks, added to healthy ice cream, etc.But if looking for clinically studied, highly verified, ultra functional flavanol product, then the one I linked to is the winner. However, less cocoa flavor, and less flavanols. It can boost the chocolate flavor of something, but it has more of a raw/darkish chocolate taste rather than a smooth chocolate taste, which I think Toniiq has. But I like the flavor of the other too.If I HAD to choose one over the other, I would go with the other. Just be aware of the size / dry weight before purchasing. The jar is very small and is only 2.9 oz which makes it upwards of $137 per pound! I totally take responsibility in that I wasn’t careful at looking at the actual dry weight before purchasing. I was pleasantly surprised, however, that even though the scoop was smaller, it still gave my morning coffee protein smoothie a nice rich chocolate flavor.

I don’t totally follow supplement trends unless my cousin tells me about that, and honestly, this cocoa powder trend is interesting because it follows after the “cocoa crisis” when there was a shortage. It’s almost like there’s a surplus that the industry is trying to repackage as trendy. Despite that cynicism, I think this Toniiq brand of cocoa powder delivers the cocoa flavor and the ultra high flavanols and I like that it’s an alternative to drinking other caffeine-laden beverages. BUT, it’s definitely for those like my cousin that lift weights and drink protein shakes. This powder does not have easy solubility as it does not stir well in a glass of milk or water or coffee; it requires shaking in those protein tumblers or mixing it with other ingredients in a blender. The texture of the cocoa powder is much smoother in a smoothie. I think it was effective in keeping me awake just as much as a small cup of coffee. The ingredients are simple and clean, supposedly, but you have to ask for the third-party tested results which is a bit annoying. It’s not a great value for money for me, when I’m just an average person who doesn’t lift weights and drinks normal hot cocoa.

Good Cocoa, but Hard to Justify the Price
This is a perfectly fine cocoa powder, and it tastes good. I do not have any real complaints about the product itself.The problem is the price. I understand that it is marketed as being high in flavonoids, but for the amount of cocoa you actually get, it feels overpriced. You can buy roughly twice as much cocoa for less money elsewhere, and unless you are specifically chasing the flavonoid claim, that makes the value here hard to justify.Good product, but the price knocks it down for me.

Very bitter, and expensive
This tastes and smells like good quality cocoa powder. It tastes like baking cocoa; it is a completely unsweetened powder. The powder itself is very bitter, just like baking cocoa, and can be used for mixing into drinks or smoothies. The powder itself is extremely fine, like powdered sugar, and will poof up in your face when you open the container for the first time. The powder does not stick together or clump up when dry. It is easy to scoop up with either a spoon or with the measuring scoop in the container.The very fine powder mixes well into most thick liquids, at least as well as cocoa powder mixes. Cocoa powder likes to clump up unless you mix it in a blender. If you are mixing it into plain water it’s probably not going to work very well. Likewise, if you’re mixing this into milk or just using a basic utensil to mix, it’s going to leave little bitter lumps on top. Best to use this in something that you make in the blender. This is plain, unsweetened cocoa powder, so it’s going to be extremely bitter unless you add your own sweetener.The price seems pretty expensive. You don’t get a ton of the cocoa powder for what you’re paying. Even for a supplement, this seems like a lot.Overall, this is a very bitter, fine powder, and mixes well in a blender. It is packaged securely with an inner safety seal, and the lid fits back on securely after opening the bottle. Each bottle also comes with its own mini dosing cup. Overall, kind of bitter and expensive. Also a little hard to verify the claims they make about its health benefits. But if you’re looking for a high-flavanol cocoa that you can put in smoothies, this product will do the trick.
