There have been some encouraging reports coming out on the effect of microdosing lithium on various brain stuff. Anecdotally, I know a couple of people it has done good things for. Having the opportunity to test this supplement was a good chance to try it myself.I had to do some research before beginning. Number one, the dose. 5 mg seems like a lot (I know people taking 1 mg) but still falls into the microdose category. Second, whether it would interact badly with other meds I’m taking; it passed this test, but your mileage may vary.I’ve been using this for a week now, and the good news is I feel no worse than I did before. I actually think I feel a little better, but the placebo effect is real, and it will likely take a lot more time before any real benefit shows up.The biggest concern I have with ordering supplements online is whether they are genuine. Rainbow Light is a reputable brand, and the product listing does appear to come from them, but I tested it anyway. I have a chemistry background and know that many minerals can be distinguished by the color they produce when burned. Lithium, in particular, will make a bright crimson red color. I emptied a capsule, added some water (it doesn’t dissolve), dipped a skewer into the mixture, and put it into the flame on a gas stove. Rainbow Light Lithium Orotate 5 mg SupplementAside from the Lithium Orotate, the capsules also contain rice powder, probably because 5mg is such a small amount that even tiny capsules would look nearly empty without an inert filler like rice powder. Even with it, the capsules are quite small.I have been very slowly increasing the amount of this supplement that I take per day. I started by opening a capsule and shaking out only enough to cover the tip of my finger. Even just this much made me feel a little drowsy in the middle of the day, so I’m very glad I started with so little.I ended up buying a jewelry scale that can calculate weight in fractions of a gram and a bag of empty gelatin capsules. I used the scale to divide one capsule into ten equal parts which I put into ten empty capsules. This should be giving me roughly half of one milligram in a daily dose. I’m slowly becoming accustomed to it, but it still makes me feel quite lethargic, so I only take it at night, an hour or two before bed. It makes me feel, not just drowsy, but calmer and more relaxed. I can still read and function normally after taking it so it’s not dulling my ability to think or move, but I feel like it’s working to curb my racing late night thoughts.At such a small amount daily, this bottle should last for a long, long time. I’ve only had good experiences with Rainbow Light supplements and this one has been very good, too. Aside from the expected drowsiness, I haven’t had any side effects or problems, and it seems to be helping me get to sleep faster.
