Useful Calcium Supplement for Laying Hens and Other Birds
This is a review of the Happy Wings Calcifarm Calcium Carbonate Grits for Birds & Poultry (5 lb), that was priced at $16.99 (price shown in the listing) at the time of this review. For poultry owners, especially those with laying hens, providing a supplemental calcium source is an important part of maintaining flock health. This product offers a simple and natural option by using 100% calcium carbonate limestone grits rather than oyster shell. One thing I like is the versatility. The grits can be offered free-choice in a separate feeder or mixed into feed, making it easy to incorporate into an existing feeding routine. The particle size also appears suitable for chickens, ducks, and various bird species. For laying hens, calcium supplementation can help support stronger eggshell formation, which is often the primary reason people seek products like this. The natural limestone source may also appeal to owners looking for an alternative to oyster shell products. The 5-pound bag provides a decent amount of product for backyard flocks, and the granulated form is easy to handle and store. At roughly $3.40 per pound, it isn’t the cheapest calcium source available, but the convenience, purity, and packaging may justify the cost for smaller flock owners who don’t require bulk quantities.Overall, this is a straightforward, easy-to-use calcium supplement that supports eggshell quality and overall bird health. If you’re looking for a natural limestone-based calcium source for chickens, ducks, or other birds, it appears to be a solid option.Rating: 4.5/5 stars. Simple, effective, and easy to incorporate into a poultry feeding program.

Better-Sized Calcium Pieces for Both Chickens and Quail
What stands out to me about these calcium pieces is their size. They are large enough for bigger birds, such as chickens, while still being small enough for smaller birds like quail.I previously bought oyster shell crumbles, but many of the pieces were huge. My quail would pick through them and leave the larger pieces behind, resulting in a lot of waste. These are much better sized, so there is noticeably less waste. These are made from limestone rather than oyster shell, so it is important to check the recommended feeding amount. With oyster shell, I can leave it available free-choice and let my quail eat what they need. Limestone, however, should be provided in appropriate amounts rather than offered without limits.Overall, the particle size is much more practical for smaller birds, while still being suitable for larger poultry as well.

Keeps my feathered friends healthy !
I have 3 smart bird feeders on our property and have so many backyard birds visiting them everyday i feel that i need to give them the best seed i can get to keep them healthy so when i seen this calcified calcium and like the fact that it can help them get the nutrients they need and help their bones be strong and feathers stronger . I sprinkle a bit on top of the seed in the feeder but you can also put it in a feeder by itself so they have access to it and eat it as they need it .

calcium supplement for chickens and wild birds
This bag of calcium carbonate grits can be used by those taking care of chickens or feeding wild birds to give them a source of grit, which is essential for their digestion processes, and extra calcium supplementation, which can be a problem for many bird species to keep their bones strong. Chickens, especially hens who lay eggs, should be given extra calcium to help prevent painful and deadly health complications from the massive and unnatural amount of eggs they have been bred to produce (for comparison, many modern chickens used for eggs law over 300 eggs per year, but the ancestor to chickens, the red jungle fowl, lay 15 or less per year).Roosters, even of breeds known for high egg playing, should not be given too much calcium, as high levels of calcium can lead to health issues, including kidney damage. The hens I care for did not prefer to eat this product straight from a bowl, but did when it was mixed with their feed or scratch treats.

Excellent addition to the seed and meal worms.
I’m not an expert on birds, and don’t keep chickens, but I do whatever I can for variety of mixed flocks and backyard birds we get out here in the country. So, when I saw the opportunity to add nutrients I know birds need with this calcium carbonate, I grabbed it! Now I have enough for the birds ( saved eggshells weren’t enough). I just put these grits out for my birds amongst the many feeding stations, especially come early spring. I think for 5pounds it’s reasonable.

Good Quality Calcium Carbonate Grits for Birds
The Happy Wings Calcifarm Calcium Carbonate Grits for Birds & Poultry, 5LB is a good quality calcium supplement that is practical, straightforward, and comes in a generous 5 lb quantity. Calcium carbonate grits serve double duty for birds — providing essential dietary calcium while also supporting healthy digestion through the grit component. This is a foundational supplement for poultry and bird keepers who want to make sure their flock is getting adequate calcium intake, particularly for bone health and egg production. Five pounds is a substantial supply that will go a long way, especially for smaller flocks, making it a good value for the quantity. The product is clean and consistent with no quality issues. A solid, reliable calcium supplement for bird and poultry care. Recommended!

Bright White, Consistent Mineral Grit Enables Smooth Feeder Flow and Attracts Hens
Providing supplemental calcium free-choice is standard practice for laying hens, but getting birds to consume enough of it often comes down to texture and visibility. Having previously used traditional flaked oyster shell, switching to this Calcifarm calcium carbonate grit has shown an immediate improvement in flock interest.High-Contrast Visibility: Traditional oyster shell tends to be dark, grayish, and blends in with bedding or dirt. This natural crushed limestone is bright white, which catches the hens’ eyes immediately. The flock took to it right away without any hesitation.Uniform Particle Size & Feeder Flow: Oyster shell often contains a mix of large, sharp shards and powdery waste. This grit has a very consistent, small grain size throughout the entire bag. Because the pieces are uniform and rounded, it flows smoothly through separate gravity feeders without jamming or bridging at the dispenser opening.Effective Free-Choice Supplementation: Offering it in a separate dish allows laying hens to regulate their own mineral intake based on their individual production cycles alongside standard layer pellets. It delivers reliable dietary calcium to support strong, smooth eggshells and healthy bone density.Packaging & Longevity: The 5-pound bag is sturdy, seals securely to keep moisture out, and provides a long-lasting supply for backyard flocks when offered free-choice.A clean, high-quality alternative to oyster shell that birds actively prefer and that dispenses far better in standard poultry feeders.

Calcium carbonate sourced from limestone, not oyster shellsCalcium carbonate sourced from limestone, not oyster shells
I have not used calcium carbonate from limestone for my chickens before. We previously had both a processed oyster shell product from Nutrena as well as natural flaked oyster shells in bulk from our local feed store. All three of these forms all have the same ingredient which is calcium carbonate. This Happy Wings grit has a smaller particle size than I was expecting, but it is very uniform. The Nutrena has a wide variety of particle sizes including quite a bit of dust in the bottom of the bag. The Happy Wings calcium is very clean and dust-free. I’m wondering if the smaller Happy Wings calcium will have less waste than the Nutrena product. I often see my hens grab a granule, nibble it a bit to test for size, and then either eat it or toss it on the floor. I also like that the Happy Wings calcium doesn’t really have any smell at all. Often the oyster shell products have quite an odor, likely from being cleaned and processed. I don’t expect my hens to have any quibbles with this Happy Wings calcium. If I notice over time that they do, I’ll come back and add an addendum to this review.
