A word of caution…
First off…niacin, as a supplement to reduce ldl and raise hdl is great. It is proven and I have been using it for a couple of years now as an alternative to statins. Like many, I turned to this extended release version to avoid the flush and it works in that regard. So, it works as niacin and its apparent side effects are minimal compared with regular niacin so it does what it says. The issue is what it does that it does not say. If you google immediate release niacin and extended release niacin and side effects, you will see that there is usually an additional warning that extended release can cause liver damage. So, this means it has a greater impact on liver function as the result of its mechanism of being released over hours instead of immediately. In essence the liver does not have to deal with a heavy impact of niacin, just a long term one. Well, apparently that long term means the liver never really has a chance to recover. How it impacted me I believe and I qualify that because it has only been a few days off of it, is that it affected my glucose control. As a type 2 diabetic who only uses metformin and diet and exercise to control my sugar, I am a certain subset of the the diabetic family. You could say I have a very mild form of the affliction. As a result, I represent a small portion of those trying to control the cholesterol using niacin, so this review is only for those in my situation, or close to it. I go through spurts in testing since I tend not to change my habits and so testing periodically works (worked) well for me. I started taking this stuff last march. And when May rolled around I began checking my glucose level and found results that were concerning. My fasting glucose went from 100 to 130 and I would have spikes into the 200’s after a cup of coffee with just a little creamer. The spikes were completely new. Well the liver plays a major role in holding and releasing sugar if needed and if it is stressed, then all bets are off. For a period of weeks I considered everything else but the niacin as the culprit…its disappointing that it took me so long to take a look at the niacin, but it probably contributed that I was taking a low dose 2 500 mg per day and that is far below what others take or what is considered dangerous. Having stopped taking niacin for a few days now my sugar levels have returned to normal and because of dietary changes I made along the way, tea instead of coffee for instance, they are better than ever. Fasting glucose was 89 this morning. There will be some who consider that I may have an agenda since no one, including myself, likes to see a product they like have any negative reviews, but if you take a look at my reviews, you will see I am a legitimate reviewer who just passes along what they feel about a given product. And there is supporting evidence via google with regard to niacin impairing glucose control, so…if the shoe fits, then consider an alternative. They are out there. I am currently looking into pantethine.

IMPORTANT! Women On Cholesterol Medications PLEASE Read This
Since recent research (past six or so years) has proven that the main ingredient in cholesterol medication, STATINS, not only DO NOT WORK ON WOMEN but were shown to significantly increase your risk of getting diabetes, women are left with no viable control for high cholesterol for the next 20 years or so (seriously) while researchers create, test and retest, then try to pass the FDA. The only thing left for us are old cures such as niacin and garlic coupled with diet and exercise.I’m going to get on my soapbox here to say that, once again, “modern medicine” has shown their total disregard for women by only norming statins on groups of all-male subjects. Norming means all the testing a drug has to go through to get approval by the FDA. The same has been true with so many medications and health issues — lung cancer and heart attack probability from cigarette smoking were all done on only men; it was over a decade later before they figured out that women had the same risks — and that happens to this day. Due you know that there is still no cure for, let alone research on, so many female reproductive disorders and women are just prescribed birth control pills to fix most of them because there is nothing else. Endometriosis comes to mind. Here, take some birth control pills. Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest because it makes me so angry.Please be aware that your family doctor may not be aware of this more recent research on women and statins and may disagree with me because they don’t know. But you can do the research on your own. Just don’t go to pop med websites like WebMD. Only real research journals have this information. I read over 25 medical journal articles (the actual hard research data) along with opinion journal articles on this topic, and even lost respect for the Mayo Clinic website for concluding that women should just take statins (cholesterol medication) anyway because there is nothing else. If it does absolutely nothing (which it truly does) but is proven to increase your risk of getting diabetes why would you do that?!?So we women only have niacin and garlic along with diet and exercise for the next 20+ years. Great, huh. This is one of the top rated niacins and it works for me.

LIPID MANAGEMENT
Hello All,i just wanted to give some brief up front information on Niacin’s effectiveness. i will update as time goes on . i am a registered pharmacist and have been in practice for over 20 years. I have always been a big advocate of herbal medicine and regardless of what mainstream medicine says ..they play a strong role in disease management, more than you think. I can tell u honestly that Allopathic doctors (MD’s ) are way too pen happy when it comes to writing prescriptions . This is largely due in part to the kickbacks they receive from Big Pharma for writing as many legend drugs as they can get on a prescription pad!! this is my opinion only. Statin drugs are way over prescribed these days and they have their flaws i can attest!. SE’S include muscle weakness; can precipitate type 2 diabetes (it may be small chance but if u are borderline diabetic they can tip you over the edge) To be brief they are not for everyone. Niacin , or Nicotinic acid on the other hand is a form of Vitamin B3 . it’s a natural product unlike statin’s that are 100% man made .you want the more natural product. Niacin can control your lipids very well , just as well as statin’s or better (they raise HDL or good cholesterol better than Statin drugs) .Also they are a lot cheaper than statins especially if you are not on a prescription drug plan. With that out of the way my past experience with Niacin has been very good if not excellent . Previously in 2016 my LDL was 183 and HDL was in the low forties ; total cholesterol was 260 if i can remember correctly . The PA-C at the MD’s office got frightened and wanted to put me on a statin drug. I said NO!! There are placebo controlled studies in several American Medical journals that strongly support the use of Niacin. After Niacin therapy for several months my LDL dropped to about 130 and my HDL went up to 48, my TC down to 200 . i recently a week ago went back on this brand DR’ s Best so like i said previously i will update as time goes on but i expect this Niacin to preform very well. it is a Amazon best so i expect it to follow through. I’ll let you know. Yes, there are SE’s with Niacin ..the flushing and the itching which are very real I know . taking a slow release from helps with this and try taking it right before bedtime helps also (cholesterol production is highest while we sleep) . In conclusion i would highly recommend speaking with your doctor about the benefits of Niacin over statin therapy for Lipid Management. There are a lot of theories ,opinions out there about treating High cholesterol and you need a doctor who will listen to you and “think outside the box” about how to treat your high lipids . Many of them just follow a Logarithm taught to them and move on to the next patient ! You get my drift. This is my professional opinion only

REDUCING CHOLESTEROL
After taking this for 3 months my good cholesterol went up, bad cholesterol went down and overall cholesterol decreased 10%. All very positive results.I eat healthy, exercise on a regular basis and have done so for years and my cholesterol remained borderline high.I wanted to avoid statins so I wanted to give Nicotinic Acid a try. After reading/researching about Niacin and specifically Nicotinic Acid I gave this a try and it works.From my research nicotinic acid is the key ingredient to lower cholesterol…..not Niacin. If you take Niacin and not nicotinic acid you will not experience these changes.This product does cause flushing but I find it to be inconsistent and it doesn’t bother me. I take this product 2x per day and might experience flushing 2-3 times per week.Highly recommend this product
