I have had to deal with some severe issues that have made it so that I need natural sleeping aids to get through. This does have scientific backing – it just didn’t work for me
I do have issues falling asleep. I was hoping this would work. Melatonin certainly never worked for me! This has pure ingredients backed by a known producer. I think this COULD be a five star product for the right person. Here are my observations:1) Opening this up, there is a pleasant, sweet smell2) You get a 60 day supply and the capsules are easy to swallow3) No weird reaction to these4) I took these as directed – an hour before sleep – and nothing – I did this for almost two weeks.The price and contents are excellent – I just wished it worked for me 🙁

Simple melatonin free option for my nighttime routine
I wanted something for my nighttime routine that did not contain melatonin, and these valerian root capsules have been a good fit. I absolutely loved this valerian root. I have been a longtime user of naturopathic, relaxing, calming, and muscle relaxing supplements, and valerian root is always such a winner for me.However, the different forms that you can use them in are many, and a lot of them come with messier qualities like tinctures, or you’ll find that certain brands will slip in other ingredients, and if you have sensitivities like I do, due to having conditions that can make you more reactive, a la mast cell activation syndrome, histamine intolerance, etc., as well as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, where certain things can have blood thinning qualities to them.And so if you are using this as something to assist your muscles, if they slip in things that make you have thinner blood, and you have conditions such as these, it’s a total pass for me, and it can be frustrating to find things that you think are only valerian root, but actually are valerian root plus a bunch of other ingredients.And so having this be simply valerian root only is wonderful.The other thing that’s really great is they list specifically on the back that this is gluten-free, non-GMO, vegan-friendly, with no added sugar, milk, lactose, soy, or water. I’m sorry, wheat, not water.And so I will also note that it’s lovely that these are third-party tested, and 21st Century is a company that has been around for a long time, and is known for having very decent quality and listing very specifically what is in their supplements, as where a lot of different supplement manufacturers that are up and coming are actually flash in the pan.And so they will come out with a supplement and then they’ll be gone. And so you can’t really trust that the amounts that they are putting in their tinctures or pills or capsules are what they say they are.21st Century is a longstanding brand that has a good reputation in the industry that I trust.So I highly suggest these. The pills are not too large nor too small. They do a very good job at helping me to relax both muscularly and mentally.The one con that most would list is that valerian root is a very smelly herb, but if it didn’t smell horribly I would be concerned that it wasn’t real valerian root.They do help me get to sleep a lot sooner. And as I will in the near future be titrating down from using diphenhydramine to sleep each night due to my conditions, I will be using this and will rest easy knowing that they will assist me in getting to sleep earlier, as well as staying asleep for longer while assisting my body in relaxing.I would highly suggest anyone trying these that know that they are not going to have any type of reaction to valerian root. It’s a good company. It’s a good value for the price.

Gentle Help for the Occasional Restless Night
I want to preface this by saying I have nothing against melatonin. My husband takes it for a sleep disorder, and we’d have some serious issues without it. The problem is that the dosage we keep in the house for him is much higher than anything I’d need for my rare nights of having trouble falling asleep. I’ve always just ordered a very low-dose melatonin for myself when needed, but I’d never tried valerian root before. When I had the opportunity to try this, I figured I’d give it a shot.It works well for me. The effect is very mellow. It doesn’t feel like it “knocks me out,” but it does seem to help me settle down and fall asleep when my mind just doesn’t want to shut off. Just as importantly, I feel fine the next day without any noticeable grogginess.I do want to put my experience in perspective because my sleep issues are both rare and mild. Most nights I fall asleep within minutes and sleep soundly through the night, so I can’t speak to how well this would work for someone dealing with more significant or chronic sleep problems. For me, though, it’s perfect as an occasional aid on those nights when sleep isn’t coming as easily as usual. Not Just for Sleep, Good for Calming & Focus (And Yes, It Smells Pungent)
I have taken multiple brands and supplement combos of Valerian Root in the past, so I’ve tried a lot of similar products before. This one is pure Valerian Root and works pretty well for me. You know it’s fresh and authentic if it smells like pungent earthy wet dog or swampy belly button. In my experience, the Valerian Root supplements that didn’t smell strongly didn’t work.I don’t use it for sleep; I use it for its calming effect and to help me focus. For me, it works for about 4 hours before the effect wears off, so I take it either in the morning or afternoon when I need to stay calm, focused, and complete tasks, as it helps me with executive dysfunction. It does not make me tired, though I’ve never taken it before bed or with the intention of sleeping. Being neurodivergent may cause it to affect me differently than it would others.Even though I take it in the daytime and don’t use it for sleep, I seemingly do in fact sleep more quickly and soundly when I eventually do go to bed. I’ve always been a vivid dreamer so that hasn’t really changed, but the supplement seems to make my dreams feel more happy, zen, or just pleasant overall. I have been waking up more calm and happy lately. I will definitely be purchasing it again and recommending it to others.Pros:1.) It calms me and helps me stay focused on tasks.2.) A pleasant surprise: There has been noticeably less swelling in my face, ankles, arms/wrists, and hands/fingers lately. I have been taking it for a little less than 2 weeks. It seems to have a synergistic effect taking it alongside Moringa.3.) It doesn’t have melatonin.4.) Later at night I do sleep more quickly and soundly with more pleasant dreams, despite taking it in the daytime for focus & relaxation.5.) The price is great at $9.99 for 60 capsules. This brand in particular (21st Century) offers a lot of affordable prices for different supplements and is a brand I trust. I have regularly purchased their products for years.6.) It comes with a tamper protection seal.Cons:1.) It can make your poo smell strongly like Valerian Root.

I rarely if ever need help falling or staying asleep. But on occasion there is that night where I am cursing and wishing I could find something to drift off into slumber. I saw this bottle of Valerian Root from 21st CENTURY and figured I would give it a try.Bottle contains 60 capsules with a recommended dose of one capsule.Stamped on bottom of the bottle is the lot# and expiration date….04/2028.There is a smell when opening the bottle. I can’t really describe it but it seems like valerian root does have a smell so there is that.Capsules are slightly to the small side of average.I like that this is a single ingredient supplement.I am one of those people who really does not react to supplements that are supposed to make you relaxed and or tired. On the flip side caffeine does not effect me at all either. So I waited for the maybe all of once every six or so weeks when I was wide eyed instead of asleep and tried this. For me it did absolutely nothing.I even tried it a couple times like they recommend…about an hour before bed. Didn’t make me any more relaxed or sleepy. I literally felt nothing.I had zero side effects.I am not going to disparage this product just because my body doesn’t respond to things like this. It’s just how I am.I like 21st century supplements, one supplement they make has been a staple of mine for at least the past five years. Any supplement I take MUST do third party testing and 21st century does just that. That third party testing is the reassurance to me that what I am ingesting is exactly what is listed on the ingredients list. It also gives me peace of mind to know it’s been tested for impurities like heavy metals and mold..I’d still recommend it with the caveat that if other types of sleep aides don’t work it might be the same for this. Either way with the more than reasonable price point it’s worth trying.

21st Century has been making supplements for more than 35 years, and I have had consistently good experiences with the brand. This standardized valerian root extract appears to be another solid, straightforward product.Each vegetarian capsule contains 200 mg of standardized valerian root extract. That number may look lower than products advertising 1,400 mg or 2,500 mg, but those are often measuring ordinary root powder or using a different form. When comparing standardized extracts, 200 mg is a common serving size.The formula is simple rather than a blend. The label lists valerian root extract along with oat fiber, rice bran, cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide. It is also labeled vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free, and melatonin-free.The bottle arrived properly sealed, with identifying production information and an expiration date printed on it. I counted 61 capsules even though the bottle promises 60. The capsules were evenly filled, dry, separate, and free from loose powder. There is no desiccant packet, but nothing was sticky or clumped.The capsules are a normal, manageable size and were easy for me to swallow. The bottle even includes an actual-size capsule illustration on the label.Once the inner seal is removed, the herbal smell is very strong and unmistakably valerian. I chewed one capsule for science, and it was intensely bitter and tasted exactly as strong as it smelled. I will be swallowing the rest.I use valerian occasionally as part of my nighttime routine, and I appreciate that this product provides a standardized extract without melatonin or a long list of additional herbs.
